Topic: Sustainable Buildings 
Case Study: Parramatta Square, Sydney
Parramatta Square is a six building complex which offers one of Sydney’s (and Australia’s) largest commercial business precincts. It achieves this by its centralised location within Sydney’s second CBD (Parramatta), and integrates these commercial spaces with the surrounding retail and restaurant spaces and public transport. 
The design and vision of the complex was to give an already growing city, a vibrant central location for office spaces with state of the art facilities which are cost effective and include premium grade spaces. In an attempt to achieve this, some of the best end of trip facilities include: bicycle parking and repair station (discussed later), showers, lockers, dryer room, towel services, vending machines etc. With my current job and my most recent job, both companies (high profile organisations) are located within the Parramatta Square precinct, for these reasons, which has set the tone for other companies to do the same. The first two of the six buildings have been awarded a 6 star green star rating, and this is due to sustainability being at the core of the design process.
As an ex employee who used to work at 4PSQ, I can confidently speak about the quality and success of the buildings. 4PSQ as mentioned earlier has a 6 star green star rating – interior rating, but is also the only building (in the complex) to also have a 6 star green star – as built rating. The whole building is split in two (low rise and high rise) between two different departments. Within the rise we were designated, we were free to work on any level as we worked on a hot desk system. This gave us the flexibility and opportunity to work from home, work with different people from not only within our team but also other teams without leaving a semi-permanent affect on our work space as desks were cleared after every shift. Two main aspects in which I noticed big differences and this lean towards a sustainable future was in the waste management and we also had a ‘winter garden’ on one of the top floors. Designated garbage was separated to encourage and enforce staff to be more conscious of where our waste goes. This concept was encouraged before the buildings were even completed. The Parramatta Square project achieved a 92% recycling rate across construction and demolition of the project.
The final topic I will discuss is the effect of reducing car emissions, which is achieved in this building by its proximity to a train station and the bicycle facilities. These encourage staff to not drive and instead opt for a more sustainable option like public transport or, even better if close enough, riding a bike to work and having all the facilities on site to encourage this.
With the push to move businesses to Parramatta, it as a result releases some of the pressure on Sydney, reducing the demand of commercial office space, potentially business leasing costs and as a result could potentially lower the cost of living/working in Sydney.
